...important information for Gelbvieh breeders & friends

Welcome New AGA Members!

Registration Reminders

The International Year Code is U for 2008. All 2008-born calves need to carry a “U” as part of their tattoo.

If you have multiple herd prefixes in your family, but want to market cattle under one herd prefix that is allowed. However, when filling out the registration applications you need to highlight that herd prefix that needs to be changed or send a note with the work stating that you want all prefixes to be “XYZ”. You must make that note each time you register cattle. The information that prefixes need to be changed is not stored in the database. If you have questions, call the AGA Registration Department.

Gelbvieh Arrivals Nathan Lucas Burbank made his appearance on March 19, 2008 at 2:10 a.m. He weighed 6 lbs., 12 ounces and measured 20 inches long. Nathan is the son of Luke and Jenny Burbank of St. Louis, Mo. Proud grandparents, Laurie and John Burbank, keep busy with Seedstock Plus LLC and Burbank Cattle Company near St. Catharine, Mo.

Becky and Mike Purswell of Y2K Cattle Company near Elizabeth, Colo., announce the arrival of their granddaughter, Tristan Renee Ford on March 27, 2008. Tristan joined her parents, Michelle and Eric Ford of Forney, Texas, at 6:58 p.m. weighing 6 lbs. 12 ounces and measuring 19 inches long.

 DNA Update

Cleaning out your semen tank prior to breeding season and planning on getting rid of some old semen straws on sires you just are not planning on using any more?  Consider sending some of this semen to the AGA.  We have run into several instances recently where we have tried to locate semen on bulls, mostly for DNA purposes, only to discover most of it had been thrown away for one reason or another.   There are many reasons why it makes sense for us to try to bank DNA on bulls that may not fit into current breeding programs.  We have some empty freezer space at the office that will allow us to keep this semen for future testing purposes.  Contact Susan Willmon at the AGA office for information on sending unwanted straws for storage for DNA testing purposes only.

State Association News

Virginia Gelbvieh Association met on March 22, 2008, and elected new officers. Stephen Fanning of Bland was re-elected President, while Nathan Haver of Goshen was re-elected Vice President. Doug Hughes of Max Meadows will serve as the new Treasurer, while Carolyn Morris of Appomattox will serve as Secretary.

State Association officers—PLEASE—be thinking of individuals to nominate for AGA Member of the Year and for the AGA Hall of Fame. Applications will be sent to state leaders this spring. Nominations for the AGA Hall of Fame are due by July 31, 2008. The Hall of Fame honors individuals for their longtime contributions to establish and promote the breed. Member of the Year applications are due by September 15, 2008. If you have questions, please contact Dianne Coffman at the AGA office.

 AGA News & Notes

If you have recommendations for or you are interested in running for the AGA Board of Directors, please contact Stuart Jarvis, Nominating Committee chairman. The Nominating Committee reviews suggestions and recommends a slate of candidates. Jarvis can be reached at 785-543-5177 or email bararrow@ruraltel.net.

If you are having any problems viewing the AGA E-Newsletter, that is published every other Friday, please email Dana Stewart at danas@gelbvieh.org or call her at the AGA office to let her know.

 Correction

There was an error in the 2007-08 Ring of Gold Bull results. Staff did not note a bull that had a name change mid-show season, same bull different name. HFGC GIP Arrowhead S82, owned by Hart Farm of Kansas City, Kan., should have been listed as the fifth place bull for the season with a total of 48 points. We regret the error and apologize.

 Around the Industry

Paul Hitch, 64, a cattleman and longtime livestock industry leader from Guymon, Okla., passed away on March 14, 2008 after a bout with cancer. Hitch was slated to be the president of National Cattlemen’s Beef Association this year but was unable to accept the term due to his serious illness.

Wade Moser, executive vice president of the North Dakota Cattlemen’s Association, announced his retirement for December 31, 2008. Moser is the longest serving executive in NDSA’s history with 26 years under his belt. A search is underway for a new executive vice president and plans are to have the position filled before Moser’s last day.
