Tilghman Hired to Coordinate Gelbvieh Junior Activities

The American Gelbvieh Association is pleased to announce the hire of Carrie Tilghman, Glasgow, Ky., as the junior activities coordinator, as of April 21.

The junior activities coordinator position is responsible for managing the American Gelbvieh Junior Association (AGJA) activities and programs, as well as supporting the goals, objectives, and programs outlined by the AGJA Board of Directors. The AGJA is made up of approximately 500 members and has the vision to unify, educate, and develop leaders of the beef industry.

Tilghman brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position. She is a past member of the AGJA, has served on the AGJA Board of Directors, and has assisted during the three previous Gelbvieh junior national shows as an intern.

Beyond Gelbvieh, she currently works as the beef exhibition coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. In that role she leads and plans Kentucky Department of Agriculture sponsored shows on a local, state, and national level. She is involved in the planning and conducting of the Kentucky Beef Expo, and the beef shows at the Kentucky State Fair and North American International Livestock Exposition.

“Carrie is a great fit for the Gelbvieh junior activities coordinator position. Her knowledge of agriculture and the Gelbvieh breed, teaching experience, and her work in coordinating shows makes her an asset to the AGJA,” said Dr. Jim Gibb, executive director of the American Gelbvieh Association.

Tilghman earned her master’s degree in animal science from the University of Kentucky in August of 2013. She holds a B.A. in career and technical education, agriculture education option also from the University of Kentucky. She has served as a research and teaching assistant working as an animal science coarse instructor and the coach of the University of Kentucky livestock judging team.

“I look forward to using my knowledge and experience in animal science and agriculture education to make a positive impact on the lives of young people and the future of agriculture,” says Carrie.

The AGJA sponsors three shows per year – two regional shows and a junior national show. Outside of the showring, members can participate in a wide variety of educational contests to help junior members develop valuable life-long skills. The contests are held during the junior national show, with a select few offered as part of the regional show. Additionally, AGJA participates in the National FFA Convention by having a presence in the Career Expo.

Membership in the AGJA is open to all youth who have not yet reached their 22nd birthday prior to January 1 of the calendar year. Membership information can be found at www.www.gelbvieh.org/juniors or contact the AGA office.
