AGA Dam of Merit/Dam of Distinction Program
The American Gelbvieh Association each year honors Gelbvieh Females that have proven to have longevity and productivity, the key economic traits for profitability in the beef industry. Cows that calve as two-year-olds and have a healthy calf every year for 10 to 12 years have greater lifetime efficiency than cows culled at younger ages for various reasons.
The Dam of Merit honors cows that have produced at least three calves with all weaning information reported to the American Gelbvieh Association. A Dam of Distinction meets the same requirements but must have produced 8 calves or more.
Owners of Dams of Merit and Dams of Distinction receive a summary report that lists the name and registration number of each recognized cow. Breeders of the females also receive a summary report that lists the name and registration number of each recognized cow bred by them. All of the data on the females must have been submitted by August 1 of each year.
The follow criteria is used to determine Dams of Merit and Dams of Distinction:
  • A Dam of Merit must have produced at least three calves all with weaning information reported to the AGA. A Dam of Distinction must have produced eight calves or more.
  • She must have produced her last calf during the time period between between January 1 of the prior year and March 1 of the current year.
  • She must possess a minimum average weaning weight ratio for all calves of 101.
  • She must have a calving interval not exceeding the maximum, calculated by the following formula:

(Number of Calving Intervals  365 Days) + 30 Days
Number of Calving Intervals

In the above formula, thirty days are added to the total number of days possible to allow for situations where breeders purposely begin calving two-year-olds before the rest of the herd. As cows get older, the maximum calving interval decreases, or the female may have had her third calf born before her fourth birthday and maintained a 365-day calving interval thereafter.
OR
Had her 3rd calf before her 4th birthday and maintained a 365-day calving interval thereafter.

The female's age at first calving must not exceed 25 months.

All data on the female must be submitted by August 1 of the current year
