Keeping on Track with HerdTrack

Q:  You start entering your calf data into HerdTrack and realize you are missing a sire or dam, what do you do?

A:  There are many solutions for this problem. If you recently purchased that cow or bull, just call the AGA and we will send you that animal record at no charge.  If you are missing an A.I. sire or an E.T. donor dam that you don’t own, you can always request those animal records from the AGA for $2.50 each. Or the most economical solution is to enter that cow or bull’s information into HerdTrack. You would do that by:

  1. Click on the “New Animal” icon located on the toolbar.

  2. Enter as much information about that animal as you can.  You will need to enter the registration number for that animal for calves to get the correct parentage.  If you don’t have the registration number you can go to the AGA website at www.gelbvieh.org and find the animal under the AGA animal search page.  If you don’t have the parentage records in your HerdTrack, simply click on the box on the lower left-hand corner of the screen. Then select the breed percent and enter the breed makeup, by clicking on the box located to the right of the yellow breed makeup box. Now enter the breed makeup for that animal. The total breed percent must equal 100. Then click “OK”.

  3. When you have finished entering animal information click “NEXT”. This will bring you to the “Animal Main” screen where you can enter additional information.

  4. Now you are ready to finish entering your calf data.

Q:  When sending registrations via HerdTrack how do I know which file I should be choosing?

A:  HerdTrack Version 1.5.1 offers you three different file types.

  1. New Data (N file):  You will be using this file most of the time.  Select the New Data file to submit initial recordings, registrations, weight updates, and transfers.

  2. EPD Request on all animals (E file):  You would send this file to request updated EPDs. This file contains all animals in your HerdTrack database. The association will generate a file containing updated EPDs for all animals, as long as a registration or AGA recordation number exists for all animals. EPDs are updated twice a year and there is a $25 charge to generate updated EPDs.

  3. Performance Update Request (P file):  You seldom use this file. This file is used to update your HerdTrack database with ultrasound data, EPD information, or performance information not submitted through HerdTrack. You use this file to manage corrections and data recalculations.

If you are currently using HerdTrack Version 1.3.1 you can upgrade today to Version 1.5.1 for no additional charge.  Call the AGA office to get your free upgrade at 303-465-2333.
